Nellie Velez joined the JFK, Jr. Institute in March 2004. As Parent Advocate for the CUNY Youth Transition Demonstration Project, she identifies and is sensitive to the issues and concerns of the program's families. She designs and implements a series of parent workshops reflecting the changing needs of families of children with disabilities and supervises the program's Parent Peer Mentors who engage families in these workshops. Ms. Velez is presently the Consumer Vice President of the Bronx Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Council and co-chairs the Council's Family Support Committee and the Children's Committee. She is also a member of the Community Services Board of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Ms. Velez previously worked for Volunteers of America coordinating the delivery of services to parents and their children. She also supervised the Early Intervention Department at the agency. In total, Ms. Velez has 28 years of experience working in the advocacy field for families of children with special needs. She has worked tirelessly to ensure that their needs are addressed at the city and state levels and to influence laws that protect the rights of children and adults with developmental disabilities.
